As a platform and online marketplace, Sinistar does not provide legal advice.
However, Quebec’s Act respecting Tourist Accommodation Establishments states that it applies to establishments providing accommodation to tourists in return for payment.
The Law defines “tourist” as follows:
“a person who takes a leisure or business trip, or a trip to carry out remunerated work, of not less than one night nor more than one year outside the municipality where the person’s place of residence is located and who uses private or commercial accommodation services.”
When you rent through Sinistar, you are hosting people who have suffered a disaster. For example, a fire, floor or water damage. They are not staying in your accommodation for pleasure or business purposes, or to carry out remunerated work.
In other words, they do not meet the definition of “tourist”. If you have any questions about the Law or its application, please seek professional legal advice.
If you also host tourists, you must comply with the Law. In this case, know your obligations.
